The following message from Alyssa Humbert of Traveling Stories arrived in the Guild’s e-mail inbox in August. Traveling Stories is a local organization dedicated to increasing the love of reading among elementary school children. Traveling Stories volunteers meet to interact with children in the San Diego area as the children read books at weekly events known as Story Tents. This is an opportunity for members to consider supporting. A list of sponsoring organizations and individuals is included below.

Hello San Diego Writers/Editors Guild,

I’d like to invite your members to help support children’s literacy in San Diego by attending the 2016 Red Balloon Awards.

This September 17th, abandon the ordinary to explore the world of your imagination. Experience awe-inducing entertainment, taste-tempting delights and inspirational heroics.

Step into the “Cirque du Livre” and participate in the inaugural Red Balloon Awards.
Be inspired. Be amazed. Be heroic.

About the Beneficiary: Traveling Stories

Traveling Stories is an award-winning, nonprofit organization that helps kids fall in love with reading by the fourth grade. With strong literacy skills, we equip kids to outsmart poverty in their own community.

Our Impact in 2015:

  • 2,000 kids impacted in California
  • 3,000 kids impacted internationally
  • 9 StoryTent programs
  • 7 World Libraries
  • $37 per month – Our cost to provide reading support to one child in San Diego for a year

Those in attendance will include Humble Bundle, IDW Publishing, Mission Federal Credit Union, Las Patronas Foundation, the Pangaea Group at Morgan Stanley, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Kevin Eastman, retired professional soccer player Landon Donovan, and other local leaders and influencers.
