Carla King of AuthorFriendly.com

At the August meeting of Publishers and Writers of San Diego (PWSD), Carla King provided a few tips to supplement the presentation of the guest speaker, Bridget Boland, shared below:

  • Carla has written a short guide, What Every Author Needs to Know About Microsoft Word Styles, offered free on Smashwords.com, when ordered with the coupon code EC55D. The eight-page tutorial is perfect if you use Microsoft Word on a PC but if you use an Apple device, you may need trial-and-error testing to locate the options instead of expecting your screen to match the screen shots of the tutorial. (I’ve been using Styles for years and can attest to Carla’s recommendation to use them to simplify formatting–and reformatting–your manuscripts.)
  • Carla has written two guides for Ingram Spark, also available free, though you’ll need to provide some information before you can download them:
  • Carla blogs on several platforms, including this piece on BookWorks.com describing the different types of editing you need to consider before publishing your work.
  • Carla posts regularly on Ingram Spark’s website on aspects of formatting ebooks and marketing. Most of those posts include links to one of the two guides listed above, illustrating the power of both publishing work and using blogs to market your work.
