Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers
Each year in June, Writer’s Digest publishes its list of the 101 best websites for writers. It also identifies the Best of the Best in each of eight categories. This post looks more closely at the Best of the Best in two categories: Jobs & Markets and Online Writing Communities.
Jobs & Markets
Hope Clark established this website in 2000 to provide information to writers about how to get paid for writing. Information about grants, contests, and markets that welcome submissions can be found on the site.
Be aware that many of the links in the right column of the site are to external sites that may involve cost to you. Funds for Writers offers both a free and a paid subscription newsletter with the paid version offering more information about sources paying at least $200 or 10 cents per word.
Online Writing Communities
Chats are scheduled on Sundays (with celebrity guests) and Wednesdays (on general topics). Participants must subscribe to take part. Since there is no archive of past chats, it is difficult to judge how useful they are. The founders of the site describe it as a safe place for beginners to ask the most basic questions without fear.
Other links on the site are to a blog and book reviews, but the most recent items posted there are from 2013 or 2015, a bit of a disappointment.
